Learn How to Popular F-150 Beats its GMC Competition
There are a lot of new pickup trucks to consider in the Springfield area, but not every one is right for your needs. Naturally, we're fond of the Ford F-150, but we have sound reasons to back up our favoritism. To learn more about why the F-150 is the right truck for the job, check out the results of our head-to-head comparison between it and the GMC Sierra 1500.
Price
The Ford F-150 has a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $28,005, nearly $1,000 less than the starting price for the Sierra 1500. Not only do you save money right from the start with the F-150, but industry analysis estimates that you'll also spend less money on maintenance over the course of ownership. Finally, since the F-150 is estimated by the EPA to deliver better fuel economy both in the city and on the highway, your yearly fuel savings will quickly add up.
Performance
If you're looking at a hard-working pickup truck, chances are that you want the best performance you can get to help you tackle the toughest of tasks. The Ford F-150 has a roster of six engine options, topping out at 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The Sierra 1500 only offers three engine choices, with top performance metrics of 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. When it comes to payload capacity and towing performance, the F-150 wins this battle. It's capable of hauling 3,270 pounds and towing up to 13,200 pounds; the GMC can only haul 2,250 pounds and is limited to a towing max of 12,500 pounds.
Interior and Features
Across the lineup of trim levels, the Ford F-150 offers drivers and passengers more head and legroom, making for a much more comfortable riding experience. While introductory models of both trucks come with such standard features as air conditioning, power steering, a tachometer and tilt steering wheels, the Ford F-150 includes some standard amenities that either aren't offered for the Sierra or will cost more money to add as options. These include power windows, power locks, and cruise control.
Safety
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Ford F-150 a 5-Star Overall crash safety rating, while the Sierra 1500 earned a 4-Star Overall rating. Credit for the Ford F-150's better rating can be partially attributed to higher scores in the all-important overall frontal crash and rollover tests.
